Huntly resident Ben Hahn and first responders were recognized at last Wednesday’s Board of Supervisors meeting for their lifesaving efforts.

Hahn assisted Jerry Brown, 71, of Amissville, who collapsed Aug. 6 at Settle’s Grocery & Garage in Flint Hill, performing chest compressions — guided over the phone by 911 dispatcher Janie Jenkins — for 10 minutes until first responders arrived on the scene.

Hahn, Jenkins and Wayne Dodson —who was operating the county’s advanced life support quick response vehicle at the time — as well as the Chester Gap paramedic team all received standing ovations at the meeting, and were each presented with a certificate.

Kathryn Waters, fire and rescue recruitment and retention coordinator, said the department hopes to continue recognizing lifesaving actions taken by community members and first responders at future meetings.

“Without your hard work and your ability and initiation to act, this person would not have been able to survive in those first 10 minutes. So we really, truly, thank you,” Waters said to Hahn.

Ireland joined Foothills Forum as a full-time reporter in 2023 after graduating from the University of Georgia’s Grady College of Journalism and Mass Communication with a degree in journalism and minor in music. As a student, she gained valuable experience in reporter and editor positions at The Red & Black, an award-winning student newspaper, and contributed to Grady Newsource and the Athens Banner-Herald. She spent three years as an editorial assistant at Georgia Magazine, UGA’s quarterly alumni publication, and interned with The Bitter Southerner. Growing up in a small town in Southeast Georgia, Ireland developed a deep appreciation for rural communities and the unique stories they have to tell. She completed undergraduate research on news deserts, ghost papers and the ways rural communities in Georgia are being forced to adapt to a lack of local news. This research further sparked her interest in a career contributing to the preservation of local and rural news.
