The “Windows to our Heritage: Art that Honors Our Journey” show is back for its second year on Saturday, Oct. 25, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the State Theater, 305 S Main St., Culpeper.

“This isn’t just a show; it’s a community gathering where everyone can enjoy vibrant artwork that deeply explores themes of heritage, resilience and cultural expression,” organizer Ruth Irving–Carroll said in a recent interview.

“The first show confirmed our belief that Culpeper would welcome this unique art,” she said. “Our long-term goal is to grow the show, not only bringing in more artists from across the DMV area, but also creating mentorship opportunities for local junior high and high school students.”

The show is the result of a partnership between two community organizations: the African American Heritage Alliance, which shares African American culture and history, and the Windmore Center for the Arts, which provides exhibition space and support.

The works are diverse, ranging from traditional oil paintings to intricately crafted textiles, reflecting themes of the African American experience. All are for sale.

The program includes a special Artist Talk, from 1-2 p.m. for attendees to chat directly with the artists.

Among the local artists is Sheila G. Jackson, who compares her creative journey to the focused, quiet patience of fishing—a thoughtful pursuit where the final piece is her delightful “catch of the day.” Her creations include fabric wall art, dolls and watercolor paintings.
