‘Conclave’ opens 2025 movie season
The new year in RAAC movies at the Little Washington Theatre opens Friday, Jan. 10 at 7 p.m. with “Conclave,” the papal suspense film starring Ralph Fiennes and directed by Edward Berger.
Nominated for Best Film, the movie is drawn from a novel by bestselling author Robert Harris. It begins with the unexpected death of a beloved pope, igniting the intriguing process of summoning the cardinals to elect a replacement.
Fiennes’ character, Cardinal Lawrence, manages multiple rounds of voting, while wrestling with doubts about his own place in the church and even in the faith tradition itself. While Lawrence agonizes, other cardinals maneuver, but are eventually forced to face embarrassing errors they tried to keep under wraps.
The voting drags on, ever more tense, as the church leaders transit from their meetings in the Sistine Chapel to the comparatively antiseptic lodgings where they must reside until the succession plan is settled.
The shocking conclusion to this extraordinary election is, if not earth-shaking, church-shaking, or it would be if the world were to learn what the audience comes to know by the end of the movie.
The movie is sponsored by the Rappahannock Association for Arts and Community (RAAC) and the organization charges no admission, but welcomes donations to cover production costs. Hearing assistance is available for any who need it.
‘Soup & Soul’ features the Tatels

‘Bad Naturalist’ gives talk at Rapp library
Author Paula Whyman describes how she attempted to restore 200 acres of Rappahannock County farmland that was long gone to seed in her new book, “Bad Naturalist.”
Hear Whyman tell her story at the Rappahannock County Public Library on Wednesday, Feb. 26 at 7 p.m. The event is sponsored by Rapp at Home and the Rappahannock Association for Arts and Community (RAAC).
When Whyman first climbs a peak in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains in search of a home in the country, she has no idea how quickly her tidy backyard ecology project will become a massive endeavor. Just as quickly, she discovers how little she knows about hands-on conservation work.
In “Bad Naturalist,” readers meander with her through orchards and meadows, forests and frog ponds, as she is beset by an influx of invasive species, rattlesnake encounters, conflicting advice from experts, and delayed plans—but none of it dampens her irrepressible passion for protecting this place.
The event is free, but due to seating limitations, please register to attend by calling the Rapp at Home office at 540-937-4664 or online at https://www.rappathome.net
